Lighting Surveys

In general lighting in the workplace should be evenly distributed and of adequate brightness. The lack of lighting in any workplace can lead to a number of safety issues for workers and others.

Lighting surveys will provide details of any defects in the lighting system. There might be glare issues which cause certain luminance to be reflected back on the eye. Other common issues are eye fatigue this is normally caused with surroundings being too bright and often found in open planned office areas. Colour schemes also need to look at with reflective issues that may be present on equipment or materials.

Current illuminance recommendations associated with design, placement, and installation along with energy requirements for building structures can be found on AS/NZS 1680 Interior lighting-industrial tasks and processes.

Some General Lighting Requirements

Recommended general work areas require 160lux.

Office environments with moderate to difficult visual tasks should have a range between 320-400lux.

These levels are only considered as minimum values when designing any lighting system.

Complete Envirotest has conducted light surveys for mining and workshop facilities for a number of years. We can help in the design and recommendations for lighting levels for your workforce to work safely in their environment.
